This weekend I went on a trip with my marching band. It was a lot of fun but I had a few realizations while away.
Since I am an "officer" (and technically staff, too) I am one of the people that helps make sure everyone is where they're supposed to be, tell plans for the evening, pick the bus movie (my favorite task!), and make sure everyone gets fed.
But boy, when it comes to food, our band is full of animals. It was like they didn't see the 50 tin trays (one of which gave me a nasty cut, ick) of KFC sitting on the picnic table or if they did their stomachs were so ravaged since they hadn't eaten since the pizza lunch that they had to crowd the table (drooling) hoping to be the first in. I know that this group is better than most. I just can't help but wonder if this group of people, who I know as individuals are so great, can behave like famished cave men then what hope is there for humanity? Are we destined to behave as animals when put in groups? Do we only "believe" we are sophisticated and evolved past such tendencies? Or, is it a question of age and maturity?
I'm reminded of the movie Mean Girls and how she would see things in 'girl world' and then imagine how they would be solved in the 'animal world'.
Just some thoughts on my mind tonight but overall the weekend was filled with a lot more wonderful than animal and I'm very glad to have been there :)
love,
